Ahead of the Football Survivor and Big5 2024/25 season, the tipsters have been mining the data once again:
The Mailman says…
- My pick: “Newcastle have hit some amazing form of late winning five on the trot in the league, and are deservedly sitting nicely in fifth place only one point behind Chelsea going into their midweek clash against Wolves. Their opponents were on the wrong side of a 3-0 drubbing by Forest in their last league outing, and Wolves have worryingly lost their previous three clashes with the Magpies at St. James’s Park and have not managed to keep a clean sheet in nine away games there in the league. Newcastle have won four of their last six Premier League games against Wolves, and I expect them to make it five from seven on Wednesday!“
- Potential pick: “Crystal Palace drew with fourth-placed Chelsea in their last league game and are now unbeaten in three, having also drawn with an in-form Bournemouth side and beating Southampton 2-1. The Eagles face Leicester away mid-week who have lost five in a row and have just one win in their previous twelve Premier League games, losing nine of those fixtures. Palace are unbeaten in their last five away league matches and will be hoping to make it six in a row on Wednesday, which would be only the third time they have managed to do so in their history, last achieving the feat in 1992!“
- Risky pick: “West Ham have been leaking goals too easily having lost 4-1 to Manchester City last time out, and 5-0 to Liverpool before that. The Hammers take on Fulham this week and will need to be careful not to repeat 2008 when they lost three in a row while conceding 4+ goals each time. West Ham are also winless in five Premier League London derby matches with their last two finishing 4-1 against Spurs and 5-2 versus Arsenal. No team has ever shipped 4+ goals in three consecutive Premier League London derby matches before!“
The Teacher says…
- My pick: “Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle in the League Cup semi-final brought an end to an undefeated run of 13 games in all competitions, but they will be hoping to keep their Premier League unbeaten streak of 10 games going as they host North London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday. The Gunners won the reverse fixture 1-0 in September, and I fancy them to do the same at home to complete a Premier League double over Spurs for the fifth time. Also, if they manage to do so without conceding again, it will be only the second time Arsenal have achieved this with the last time being over ten years ago.“
- Potential pick: “Fulham are now undefeated in eight Premier League games and take on a struggling West Ham side on Tuesday that they drew with in September, but have beaten in their previous two encounters before that, scoring seven times and not conceding a goal. Only Liverpool and Arsenal are on longer current unbeaten streaks in the league than Fulham, although six of the Cottager’s games in this run have been draws. Raúl Jiménez will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet, as he has scored more goals against West Ham than any other team in the league with six goals.“
- Risky pick: “Leicester’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa was their fifth defeat in a row, making it the longest ongoing losing streak in this season’s Premier League. The Foxes have conceeded at least twice in each of these losses, and have some real concerns in defence as they also have the unwanted record of the fewest clean sheets achieved this season with one. Leicester have in fact had just two clean sheets in their previous 43 games in the Premier League, the joint-fewest over a run of this many games by any side in the competition’s history!“
Incognito Pro says…
- My pick: “Newcastle’s 2-1 away at Tottenham was their fifth consecutive win in the Premier League, and their victory against Arsenal in the EFL Cup made it seven in a row in all competitions. This recent run of form in the league has resulted in as many wins as the campaign’s opening fifteen matches, and the Magpies last won six successive games in the competition back in December 2022. They take on Wolves on Wednesday night, and Newcastle are undefeated in their previous six encounters, winning four, and beating them 3-0 the last time the two sides met at St. James’s Park.“
- Potential pick: “Arsenal will be playing for bragging rights on Wednesday when they take on their bitter rivals Tottenham and will be hoping to inflict more damage to a Spurs side that have not won in their last four league games, losing three and drawing with Wolves. Tottenham have won just one of their last eight league games, against bottom-of-the-table Southampton, and since the start of this run, only Leicester and the Saints have earned fewer points in the Premier League than Spurs. Arsenal have won six of their last eight league games against Spurs and are looking to win three consecutive league games against them for the first time since 1989.“
- Risky pick: “ Liverpool could be a risky pick this week as they take on the team that has imposed their only defeat upon them this season. Nottingham Forest have won six Premier League games in a row, scoring 13 times, and beat the Reds 1-0 back in September. The last time the two sides met at City Ground also went down to the wire, with Liverpool edging a 1-0 win with a goal in the 90+9th minute! Should Forest get the win over Liverpool on Tuesday, it will see them equal their longest-ever league-winning run of seven, last achieved by them in 1979.“
Good luck!
